The road closure is known as the Poplar and Beech Avenue Closure (Marais Steyn Park, Edenvale) and is a restricted access area in terms of Section 45 of the Rationalisation of Local Government Affairs Act 10 of 1998. Residents access the area through the use of programmed tags. Non-tag holders are signed in as visitors, a process which includes the scanning of licence vehicle discs.
As a result of ongoing improvements, incidents of crime have dropped by over 85% since a peak experienced in 2010. The majority of residents support the road closure both in principle and through monthly contributions.
The security solution in Dowerglades involves:
- Automated entry via contributor tags
- 24/7 guarding and a dedicated vehicle which remains in our suburb
- Access to the Savika control room for trained staff to investigate any suspicious activity
- Proactive patrolling and monitored daily trip sheets for the dedicated vehicle
- A vehicle registration scanner system which records vehicle details of all visitors who enter the suburb
There are five complexes in Dowerglades: Dower Estates, Dower Ridge, Somersby, The Waterfront and Village Green.
The Beech Avenue boomed entrance is manned 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The Poplar Street entrance is currently CLOSED until further notice.
