There have been a number of crime incidents in our immediate vicinity in the last couple of weeks. While thankfully Dowerglades has not had any confirmed break-ins, it is important that we are informed and stay vigilant.

  • The Glencurve Spar was robbed by a gang of armed gunmen. Although no-one was hurt, one of our residents was caught up in the robbery and had personal items stolen
  • There was a shooting on the R24 at the Edenvale off-ramp
  • The Pick n Pay in Edenglen was robbed during the night by armed criminals
  • Three armed criminals held up a residents and robbed a home in Marais Steyn Park
  • A complex resident in the Dickie Fritz road closure was held up by armed criminals
  • A Cash Converters was robbed and a shootout ensued in Edenvale

We have been in touch with our neighbour who was caught up in the Spar robbery. Luckily she was unharmed and her access tag was not taken.

The WhatsApp groups per street have proved to be an extremely valuable tool in keeping us vigilant as they give us many eyes and ears on the ground immediately, as we saw with recent concerns on dustbin collection days.

Please remember that they cannot replace calls to the control room for the trained response officers to investigate concerns in the neighbourhood. Call the Savika Control Room to report any suspicious vehicles or behaviour on 0861 234 737 / 011 234 7434. Calling the control room sets in motion a series of more urgent and traceable actions. Have you saved the number on speed dial?

Additional safety tips:

  • If you spot a suspicious vehicle in the area, call it in.
  • Criminals drive through neighbourhoods slowly to check for any weaknesses that they can exploit – report this if you see it.
  • Likewise, please be extra vigilant on dustbin days – there is a risk that people you may think are collecting recycling refuse are actually scouting out the area and homes. Rather call it in so that they can be monitored and so that they know they are being watched.
  • Check the security measures in your home and on the perimeter of your home and ensure that all elements are in working order.
