As we approach the festive season and its accompanying surge in criminal activity, we have seen two attempts to gain access into homes in Dowerglades. While we are pleased that these attempts were unsuccessful, we need to ensure extra vigilance – we simply cannot allow complacency to set in.

In the first incident, the palisade fence near the park was broken and access was gained into the property of a home near the park. The additional security measures in place at the home were activated and the would-be perpetrators fled when the alarm sounded.

In the second incident, two men in a vehicle came into Dowerglades and told the domestic worker at one of the homes that they were there to repair the oven and that the owner was expecting them. She called the owner who said not to open the door and she immediately called the Savika control room. The reaction officers arrived at the home within a couple of minutes and the repairmen were escorted out of Dowerglades.

What was done following each of these instances and what can we learn from them?

The palisade fence was repaired and extra patrols were added to the park area. Perimeter security is one of the areas we hope to bolster as part of our greater security plans for the suburb, finances permitting. This attempt illustrates the importance of maintaining the levels of security – general area security and individual home security systems. Please test your alarm and evaluate your security measures.

The vehicle with the repairmen has been flagged as suspicious and backup will be called for should it enter Dowerglades again. The correct protocol for entry was followed, which means that the vehicle licence details scanned are on file to flag the car. Please advise your staff and family not to open for anyone unless they check with you. If you or your staff are unsure or suspicious, please call the Savika control room immediately on 0861 SAVIKA / 0861 728 452.

We are seeing more and more tips and queries being posted on the street WhatsApp groups. Thank you for your interest and participation – the more alert and aware we are, the more difficult it is for criminals to target Dowerglades. Thank you also for your ongoing support and contributions which make it possible to have these crime deterrents in place in our suburb.
